- MCC HALO GAME: Halo 2 classic
- FEEDBACK: There are numerous graphical inconsistencies between MCC Halo 2 classic and legacy Halo 2, particularly in regard to (but not limited to) broken/bugged lighting during cutscenes, as well as missing snow and dust particle effects.
- ADDITIONAL INFO: I've made several side-by-side screenshot comparisons (which I've linked below) between legacy Halo 2 and MCC Halo 2 classic that demonstrate exactly what I'm talking about. A lot of these issues are pretty self-explanatory, but I'll provide a brief explanation for the differences that are more subtle.
This is difficult to show in a still screenshot, but as the elevator moves down the shaft, dynamic lighting is meant to be repeatedly cast on and off of Chief during this scene. This effect is absent in MCC.ISSUE 8: https://imgur.com/5RjFm2X
Note the difference in how dense the glow effect is for the Phantom gravity lifts. It's difficult to do a comparison in game, but this appears to be an issue during both gameplay and cutscenes. Additionally, during the intro cut-scene for the mission "Delta Halo", the projectiles being fired at the drop pods by shade turrets seem to have a similar problem. They're smaller and have less of a glow to them when compared to legacy Halo 2. I don't know if this is caused by the same underlying issue or not, but it's similar.ISSUE 9: https://imgur.com/IcM6yT3
Look at the Covenant Carrier in the background, as well as its glassing beam (I don't know what the proper name for it is). It's difficult to tell whether the Carrier is smaller in MCC or farther away, but it's certainly not correct.ISSUE 10: https://imgur.com/koIeGFH
In MCC, the surface of Tartarus's face, particularly his forehead, does not appear to be as reflective, or "shiny" if you will, as it is in legacy Halo 2. I have compared several different scenes, and this issue persists across all of them, so this is not caused by an issue with the lighting in one particular scene. Rather, it seems to be an issue with the character model for Tartarus. I don't know whether this issue effects Tartarus's appearance in-game while you're fighting him at the end of the mission "The Great Journey," but I imagine it would since Halo 2 classic cinematics are in-engine and use the same character models that are used during game-play.ISSUE 11: https://imgur.com/o6qPN3g
Note the difference in lighting/shading inside the elevator.
Before I continue:
There are a few issues I haven't made screenshot comparisons for because they're too difficult to demonstrate without seeing the game in motion. So instead, I've linked timestamps of YouTube videos that show areas of the game where these issues occur. For each issue, I'll post a link that shows a particular area in legacy Halo 2 first, to show what that part of the game is supposed to look like. Then I'll post a link that shows that same area in MCC Halo 2 classic, where you'll hopefully be able to see the issue that I'm referring to.
I should note that although the video I'm using for all of the MCC links is more than a year old, all of these issues are still present in the current MCC build.ISSUE 12:
The atmospheric dust particles that appear in the missions "The Arbiter" and "The Oracle" in legacy Halo 2 are completely missing from MCC Halo 2 classic.
-Here's some footage of the starting area for the level "The Arbiter" in legacy Halo 2:https://youtu.be/Bq1ccLz5xUg?t=14
-Now here's the same area in MCC Halo 2 classic:https://youtu.be/JuqhLD6nfjU?t=4543
You should notice the white dust particles floating through the air close to the player in the legacy footage, and the absence of them in the MCC footage. This issue effects the entirety of "The Arbiter" and "The Oracle," during all outdoor sections of these missions.
By the way, the video I chose here for legacy Halo 2 is actually running through emulation on the Xbox 360, because the footage was clearer than any original Xbox footage I could find, and the dust particles were a little hard to see otherwise. So it's not original hardware, and I'm aware that the 360's emulation isn't perfect, but none of that effects this particular part of the game. The dust particle effects are exactly the same here on the 360 as they are on the original Xbox. I'll use original Xbox footage for all the other issues below.ISSUE 13:
Close-range snow particles that appear in the campaign levels "Sacred Icon" and "Quarantine Zone," as well as in the multiplayer map "Lockout" in legacy Halo 2 are completely missing from MCC Halo 2 classic.
-Here's some footage from the mission "Quarantine Zone" in legacy Halo 2:https://youtu.be/c7oA-FaHdJ0?t=2410
-Now here's the same area in MCC Halo 2 classic:https://youtu.be/JuqhLD6nfjU?t=13259
-Additionally, here's some footage of a cutscene later on in the same mission in legacy Halo 2:https://youtu.be/c7oA-FaHdJ0?t=2491
-And now the same cutscene in MCC Halo 2 classic:https://youtu.be/JuqhLD6nfjU?t=13399
Be sure to watch the cutscene for about twenty seconds or so for both videos. As you'll see, the MCC version looks way off without the snow. This issue effects the entirety of "Sacred Icon," "Quarantine Zone," and the multiplayer map "Lockout," during all outdoor areas of these levels.
The small "Flood particles" (I guess that's what I'll call them) that appear during the epilogue cutscene in legacy Halo 2 are completely absent from the same cutscene in MCC Halo 2 classic.

And here's the same cutscene in MCC:https://youtu.be/JuqhLD6nfjU?t=19776
Considering this is the third issue I've found that involves missing particle effects, there's a decent chance there could be more throughout Halo 2 that I haven't noticed. I don't really have time to compare every part of the game to legacy Halo 2, but this is something that should probably be investigated further. The same also goes for the issues involving broken/incorrect lighting during cutscenes. I wouldn't be shocked if there were more of those as well, considering how many I found in just the first few levels of the gameISSUE 15:
This one is specific to the outro cutscene for the mission "Cairo Station." In legacy Halo 2, when Chief is on the elevator transporting the bomb he just disarmed, there is a shot of the elevator moving through the elevator shaft. The elevator cart itself has a flashing red light on the top, which continues to flash for the duration of the shot as the elevator moves down. This shot is initially the same on MCC, but as the elevator moves down, the red light stops flashing and turns off part way through the shot.

-Now here's the same scene in MCC:https://youtu.be/JuqhLD6nfjU?t=1650
If you continue watching past this part in both of the videos, you can see several of the other issues I've already mentioned above (the ones I made screenshot comparisons for).ISSUE 16:
Cinematic letterboxing is missing from MCC Halo 2 classic cutscenes, as well as in-game chapter titles. The previous two links I posted serve as a good comparison for this issue.
