"Pillar of Autumn orbit vs in-atmosphere dry dock"

OP LarsBars

In Frankie's recent post about Bonnie Ross, he casually throws out a topic that him and Bonnie discussed on his first meeting with her:
Quote:
Our first conversation on the topic began with Bonnie asking a pretty deep lore query about Sgt. Johnson’s apparent immunity to the Flood, and clarification on the relative position of Keyes’ ship, the Pillar of Autumn relative to orbit vs in-atmosphere dry dock.
This is one of the major issues that I had when Halo: Reach came out. By that point, I had read the original release of "The Fall of Reach" probably five times, so I was fairly confused when the Xbox 360 game placed the POA in drydock on the planet, when it was supposed to be in space fighting the Covenant ships...

Does someone have a concise explanation of what happened? Why did Bungie make the game like this? Has anything been added that blends these two (the book and the game) together more nicely?
OP, these (https://www.halopedia.org/Data_Drop) should help explain what's going on with the game vs. the book.
