The point of the Halotracker graph is that it is a 75% drop.
Christmas break is timing out

I think there are two reasons to why Halo 4 does not have a strong population like the other Halo's. My first reason is Halo 4 is not a good game. My second reason is since the Xbox is more of a entertainment console than a gaming console, people might have just given up playing games and use the entertainment features now.
Halo 4 is a good game just not up to Halo stanerds it just changed to many things and while it did improve upon stuff like AA's from reach and such it just added things that werent needed like loadouts and such and makeing running a set button. The biggest things impacting it is the completely negative reaction the games own community is giving. There acting like 343 can just snap there fingers and make everything just go back to how it was and for some odd reason belive that there not listening to them because 343 developers themselves arent responding to them directly even though you can clearly see them implementing things that people have been crying for since release. Game can be turned back into original halo as ive seen the same old Halo gameplay already done in Halo 4 being played by MLG player Saucy. Theres just too much whineing.
Well, now that we are almost a week past Christmas, we can see that it barely spiked at all, and is back to it's steady decline.
Good post OP. I think a lot of what you said is true.

Yes, a lot of people aren't playing now. I don't know, to me Halo has always been about fun. I'm still having a blast with it but the numbers show that a lot of people aren't on the same page as I am.

Maybe there just isn't room in the gaming world for an FPS that isn't pseudo-realistic. Maybe people just don't care about this sort of game any more.
Everyone I know plays nothing but CoD but it's never held my interest. I was hoping that with Halo 4, a large chunk of the FPS crowd would come back to spartan warfare and I would have a game in common with some of my friends for a change, but it looks like I may have been overoptimistic.

Still, this is the first Halo game that 343 has had in its care. Given the weight of that responsibility, they've done a fantastic job. Their direction for the story was spot on. As for all the issues, I think they'll have improved much and more with the release of another sequel. There's only room for improvement, really.

Until then, I'll just have to keep on playing Halo 4 with the few people who can join me in enjoying the game for what it is rather than focusing on all that it's not. I don't mind giving those folks up to the other FPS games. It can only mean a more fun-loving fanbase for those of us who stay behind.

I think I finally understand why there are so many complaint threads here. These people have a right to be heard, yes. But I will be happy when they get tired and just move on so the rest of us can go back to having fun. :)
If nothing is done by Feb. the peak population will be under 50k. Does anyone think this will happen? I dont, 343i has too much to lose. Im sure they will make the game fun for competitive players. All games are fun for casuals. The trick is to keep the die hard competitive fanbase while addind new things to attract others and rebuilding this halo empire.
Halo was a celebrated series because it was different from COD.

This game is bad and 343 should feel bad.
While the fanbase is split in regards to Halo 4, the population is a mutual problem that needs to be addressed, by everyone.
Um there is 120k playing right now..

Halo Charts peak population is not unique players per day or games played per day totals. You are looking at the wrong statistic and trend.

Major Nelson Xbox Live Charts from Dec 3rd.

Clearly COD is popular and #1, clearly Halo 4 has remained as #2 and clearly the peak population chart over at Halo Charts is NOT the correct statistic to look at.

The previous Major Nelson XBL chart for November 19 had Halo 4 as number 2 as well, see source link here.

Halo 4 has beaten out ACIII, FIFA13, Skyrim, FarCry 3, Borderlands 2 & Reach of course. All while holding #2 against the COD juggernaut. Halo 4 is doing great and sales have been excellent with a huge cash pile for 343i/MS.

We the community would Appreciate some unique players per day charts to replace the HaloCharts efforts and we can all see some exact numbers instead of XBL charts.

1. Only XBL or 343i numbers are the accurate ones, there is no official API support and already Halo Charts are missing a number of statistics to track population accurately. I appreciate Halo Charts they just don't have the API support to deliver the goods reliably.

2. Halo Charts does not include Spartan Ops numbers.

3. Halo Charts does not include Campaign numbers.

4. Halo Charts does not include Custom Games numbers.

5. Both #1 (COD) & #2 (Halo 4) will experience fluctuations over XMAS, gift giving and players having more time off over holidays to play games.

6. Halo has always been able to attract players back over months and I don't think Halo 4 will be any different this XMAS or through early next year either.

Can we now please stop referencing the incorrect Halo Charts statistics!
I like this... :)

That is pitiful for a game of Halo's caliber.

But that isn't good. Halo 3 had that many players a year after release.
This is the exact reason i dont like halo 4. Ive never liked the cod formula and I love the classic halo formula. This is a hybrid between the two and it is horrible.
It's minly failing because it is a reach/cod/halo mix. Get rid of the cod loadouts, the reach guns and aa, and go back to the original halo formula.

It's frustrating they don't even put in any playlist that have this option, call it throwback and include slayer and objective, get rid of all the extra bs and let me play halo the way it became popular.
I think its boring game. The maps are average and most of the money was spent on the developement of the campaign. This game overall feels like a beta only one that you payed 60 dollars to be apart of. I for one would enjoy it more if they had objective in bigteam which they should have right off the bat, but as the overall game goes this is call of duty. You will see as the halo series keeps going microsoft seems to think that since cod sales are really good every fps should go to that stytle, but if you notice the quality of these games keep going down, its all about money and it doesnt really matter if people quit playing the game you already payed 60 dollars for it they made their money.

I am making this thread to alert both the community and 343 to the continually decreasing population of Halo 4.

The thread will be centered around this graph :

http://halocharts.com/2012/chart/dailypeakpopulation/all

Such a trend CLEARLY demonstrates something is wrong with the game, and i think we all know thats true.

My hypothesis as to this decline is H4 was made to appeal to the CoD playerbase, and come the release of CoD Black Ops 2, they all left. ( As seen on the graph)

This left the Halo playerbase with effectively a hybrid Halo/CoD game, that didn't fit in with EITHER of the playerbases. The result is what we see, a AAA title with 75% of its population gone in a month after launch.

Please share your ideas as to why this is happening in the thread below.

EDIT: I have compiled a list of possible ideas from your responses in the thread:

-Lag in Spartan Ops and War Games
-Rank Cap
-Specialisation Code disaster
-Lack of playlists
-Lack of proper FFA
-Unbalanced Gameplay
-Low population causing long search times, causing lower population as people leave, downward cycle
-VERY poor maps, all seem geared towards BTB, none of the others work for any gametypes, except a few designed for Dominion, Haven for slayer and a few for "regicide"(bad FFA rip off)

Note to Mods, this thread is constructive and is discussing H4, please do not feel the need to censor, delete or lock this thread.

Thanks!
Oh man not this guy again, btw the population decrease doesn't mean the game is awful just the ones that left are disappointed that their game isn't like Halo 3. There are other games that people play, people have lives they don't spend their time on video games all day, Call of duty is bigger because it is spread through out 3 different systems and it's community/fan base is much younger, it is an easy game anyone could play. Halo has to compete with a lot of popular games back in Halo 3 it really had no competition for a while, and all games have their problems. By the way that chart just shows daily not the entire community, it has also risen after christmas by a few thousand players.

I can't wait for Halo 5.

The only thing I see that would be disappointing to many players are the lack of maps, Playlists, the rank cap yes but it shouldn't keep anyone from playing & Hopefully they will add some more playlists after the next TU and more maps probably from Forge, People are to quick to judge and since it doesn't take the snap of a finger to fix these issues and it does take up a lot of time and it costs money and since most of the issues went through the holidays where family comes first I can see why they have been busy instead of responding to people but they all can't answer everyones questions and most people are very rude when they ask questions on here.

Sorry for this debacle of a paragraph, I'm really tired and doing multiple things at the same time.
Quote:
Many players are capped and stopped playing till they can level again.
Many players are adults that only play prime time weekends
Many players are kids who have parents to only allow short playtimes
Many players are busy because its Christmas in 11 days
Many players are bored with the current maps/rotation
Many players are crap and dont want to get better so give up

And last but not least;

Many players only went online with the free 14 day trial and are to cheap to buy gold.

I think that about covers it.
You forgot something:

Many players think this game is garbage.
While everyone has their complaints about the game itself, I think another contributing factor is that CoD continues to release just after a Halo release, any momentum a Halo release would get is sucked away from people wanting the newest shooter, even if everyone playing CoD isn't a fanboy, they're going with the new release. If Halo had a solid year of release time before another CoD release, I believe populations would be larger, a cheap but effective ploy.
Between this and the fact that people seemingly love recycled CoD, not to mention so many strong game releases this year, the population size doesn't suprise me.
Halo 4 has flaws, but I don't think the population decrease is for alot of the nit picky reasons alot of perfectionist Halo fans complain about
If they want to imitate cod, then they should just release the same basic game with new maps. I'm not sure why they kept so much from reach, the worst halo game ever released, they just need to imitate halo2 with new graphics.

You forgot some things:

Many people get other games for christmas (Ex. I just got Hitman and haven't played halo since in an effort to complete it.)
Many people don't obsess over the same game as you and rotate between favourites (Ex. I switch between halo 4, gears, mass effect 3, battlefield)
Thinking low population drop reflects the quality of a game is such a narrow minded thing to think. Even though there ARE people who left because they didn't like the game, I'm sure it is a minority.
