When did the Covenant first encounter the flood?

OP Ado Ulamee

After reading the details of the temple wraith that at a point in the distant past, only zealots were charged with destroying parasite-tainted forerunner relics. Made me wonder how often prior to 2531 the Covenant came across and battled the flood.
The covenant knows about the flood in theory as a hurdle towards the Great Journey, but they have never encountered them prior to the Battle of Installation 04. This was evident as the covenant were woefully unprepared to deal with the parasites, no one had intel and no countermeasures were deployed. Those on Installation 04 did not know anything about them and it took the survivors from the battle and those from the Infinite Succor helped the Covenant devise anti-flood battle tactics.

The ones in halo wars encountered flood
yet it was said in the distant past zealots were charged with wiping out flood-tainted forerunner artifacts.
In the case of Halo Wars that Covenant battle group and of fleet was destroyed. However the Prothet of Regret was there but it can be debated he left system prior to the events of the Covenant force encountering the flood.

He knew of the flood there. The little bio for each leader in the strategy guide shows him talking with the arbiter about the flood on the surface.
I believe their first direct encounter with the flood is on the shield world in Halo Wars
No surviving covenant fought the flood prior to installation 04. Before that in halo wars, the whole battle group was destroyed and thus couldn't report back to the rest of the covenant with their findings. This is also supported by the general bewilderment of the covenant upon coming into contact with the flood. Some believed them to be created by the forerunners, others a weapons cache. Very few knew anything of them before fighting the flood, if any.

The current generation of covenant yes, the shield world and alpha halo would have been their first encounters with the flood. Yet it's mentioned the Covenant as a civilization has encountered the flood before these events.

Re’gish Wamik was concerned that the Flood may have lurked within the relic on Harvest, so the Covenant definitely knew about about it even prior to Shield World 0459.
