Halo: CE MCC; PC - Shadows look odd?

OP ItsBildo8042

Hey All,

Just curious, but is anyone else noticing odd shadows? Specifically on the updated graphics option - I am noticing weird shadows on items, characters, and geometry.

Not sure if I can post this and if its a no-no please edit and remove the link, but here is a pic of what I am talking about - if you look on the character's neck you can see a sort-of shadow-vignette around the back-side of his neck:

Yeah, I noticed this too. Especially on characters. A bit distracting, hope they will fix those in the future

Looks a bit like an old Newspaper pick or what you would get from a Dot Matrix Printer when printing images Submit it to Support with links to picks or I believe you may be able to upload it to them Not positive as I have only done DX files And perhaps circle the areas of concern in the Screen shots.
Yes, I have same problem with dithering in shadows. It hasn't improved since the last beta flight... Nvidia Geforce 1060 GTX, latest drivers.
I have submitted a ticket in regards to this issue. If you too are experiencing it, please feel free to add to the conversation:

Yeah exactly, looks very similar to old Newspaper pics/Dot Matrix pic. I would also describe it as "a screen-door overlay" as when I move it looks like a screen-door is being moved along the character. Its hard to describe without video but it sounds like you know what I mean.
VERY distracting.

Also, do the updated/anniversary graphics look a little.... idk, cartoon-y ? Or is that just me?

Na not you they have all ways look that way but it is a OLD game
Here's what fixed this issue for me. Under Video settings and then Experimental, set the Graphics Quality from 'Enhanced' to 'Original'. Shadows look normal now. Definitely seems like a shader issue with the 'Enhanced' setting. It still doesn't look perfect by any means but definitely more bearable.

Also setting the Framerate Limit to 60 instead of Unlimited makes the anniversary cutscenes MUCH less choppier. The classic graphics do not have choppiness issues with the cutscenes in my experience.
This exists in Halo Reach as well, but it's more noticeable on the grass sprites.

At 4K res with Nvidia DSR, everything looks fine. Anything less, and it will look horrible.
If you take a screenshot at 4K res while using Nvidia DSR and look at the screenshot at full-size, you can still see the dithering; so it's not a setting issue.

343 are not only avoiding this topic, but are blatantly lying about the quality of the game directly to our faces.
Here's an official image from 343 (1081p)

Here's an image taken at the exact same resolution (1080p) at the exact same moment, with the graphics at "Enhanced" (quality looks worse thanks to Imgur compression)

You can clearly see the dithered shadows on the crewman and especially on the ceiling above him.

I made a post about dithering sprites on the Steam Discussions day one for Reach and it got buried in less than five minutes because no one wants to seem to acknowledge that it exists, but if you look at many of the screenshots on the Halo subreddit, you can see it in their screenshots, too.
I also heard a rumor that 343 plans to fix a lot of things "after all games are released" which may include the audio bugs many are experiencing.
It suffers from the same issue as Reach where the post process is running outside of its native resolution of 720P. Not much you can really do and hope 343 fixes it... Since the dithering is really just the AO.
Yup, I am having it too.

I guess it's too much to ask a first-party Xbox games studio to release a working port. If you try posting anything on r/halo about it, you will usually get bombed by fanboys about not being grateful (even though it's my money being spent?)

I'd recommend holding off buying H2A whenever it releases until the audio/image effects are fixed.
I actually refunded halo reach cuz it looked so bad in 1080p.the textures looked off even in max settings. I wished 343 let us custom tweak the graphics. I think its a problem in the anisotropic filtering in enhanced.

The game doesn't use Anisotropic filtering. You can force it through the Nvidia control panel btw.

343I doesn't deserve our money with these releases until they fix the games imo. These launches were easily worse than the Gearbox port of Halo everybody hated on.

If this is what i think it is it is an issue with regards to how the "Enhanced" graphics implement Ambient occlusion. I made a post on reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/halo/comments/gowmkh/halo_combat_evolved_anniversary_dotsgrainy/ as to how you can edit the game ini files to switch the ambient occlusion back to "original" quality setting, while keeping the other benefits of the "enhanced" quality setting ( mainly the enhanced texture resolution in areas ).

I think it might be trying to implement a sort of "soft" shadow version of occlusion using dithering? but it just ends up looking really bad and worse than the original version

haven't tested stability or "stickiness" so YMMV
Having the same issue on 1660ti, Also have this issue with rdr 2 where shadows do same thing on character models and very pixelly. Glad I'm not the only one thought maybe my graphics card was faulty or something. looks terrible.
I think I get what you're talking about,,, During a CE doubles game the shadows were really standing out and kept tricking me into thinking the enemy was there but wasn't anything. Wasn't a huge deal but was kinda confusing.
I think its a general problem with dither in the mcc. It happen as well in reach LOD transitions, the dot matrix is not pixel perfect by any means. Hope they fix it, its very distracting in both games, and in reach in particular the vegetation look terrible because of this.

I completely concur - it seems the Dithering is set to 11
