Considering how beloved equipment was to the halo multiplayer community, I never understood why Bungie removed them in Halo Reach in place of Armor Abilities nor why 343 didn't chose to bring them back in future titles.
Pretty sure Armour abilities were supposed to be the upgrade. So instead of a one time use thing, you get a multiple use on a cooldown thing, which is better in a lot of ways.
343 DID bring them back for Halo 4, but I honestly don't remember them being that helpful, and I often forgot about them. In Halo 5, your Spartan is much more capable than ever before, and I think they were going with more of a traditional 'back to basics' where it's all inherent abilities, rather than using gadgets.
Imo it worked. I really like the new Spartan abliities, i.e. sprint, boost, ground pound, spartan charge... Everyone moans about them but honestly I think they really do make combat more fluid and unpredictable. They're not always one hit kills, and they are easily countered but can pack a punch if pulled off successfully. It encourages players to seek high ground, or use cover more effectively.
Boost has saved my life on countless occasions, as has Sprint. Of course there's knowing when not to use the abilities, too. Just because an enemy if below you doesn't mean you should GP him. He could just as easily bip you out of the air as you charge your ability.
Spartan charges can be dodged and leave the attacker open to a flanking attack momentarily. And of course if you just sprint around the entire map you're bound to literally run into danger.
I think they could
throw Equipment back in the mix, however I don't think at the moment it's necessary.
