Born on Earth, Gabriel Thorne enlisted in the UNSC Army at a young age. After the battle of Criterion, where he singlehandedly saved his entire platoon, Thorne fought on both Tribute and Reach, before ending up on Mars, where he served under the renowned Colonel James Ackerson. Thorne’s steely courage and tactical awareness made him an obvious candidate for entry into the SPARTAN-IV program. This recruitment saved his life during the Didact’s assault on New Phoenix--though his family became victims of the attack. Joining Fireteam Majestic in early 2558, Thorne deployed to Requiem in the UNSC’s effort to research the mysterious Forerunner world. Thorne generally utilizes GEN2 RECRUIT-class Spartan armor and is most often armed with an assault rifle while engaging in combat.

After the destruction of Requiem, Commander Palmer transferred Spartan-IV Paul DeMarco to Fireteam Bailey and put Thorne in command of Fireteam Majestic. In March 2558, Thorne and the rest of Fireteam Majestic deployed alongside Fireteams Fenrir and Colossus, where they repelled an attack on the UNSC Infinity and prevented the freighter Pilgrims’ Pride from self-destructing on the ship.

After learning that the freighter's assault craft belonged to the long-lost UNSC Spirit of Fire, Roland tracked the Pilgrim's Pride's launch origin to Oth Lodon, a gas giant situated deep within Jiralhanae space. With the prospect of finally locating the Spirit of Fire, Lord Hood gave authorization to Commander Palmer to attempt a search and rescue. While scouting the system's asteroid field, Fireteam Majestic and Commander Palmer discovered not the Spirit of Fire but rather a Covenant station under the control of New Colonial Alliance (NCA) insurgents.

After the station surprised and disabled the Infinity, Commander Palmer and Spartan Thorne led Majestic in an effort to take control of the base. Eventually, Palmer and Majestic used the station's own firepower against Covenant Shipmaster Vata 'Gajat, who had been allied with the NCA. They destroyed both 'Gajat's flagship and the station, saving Infinity from further harm.

In May 2558, Spartan Thorne and Spartan Ray were deployed to the desolate fringe world of Ven III to track down a Covenant bioweapon, though the discovery of a major pirate base complicated their mission.
