Iona was a third-generation, military-grade artificial intelligence created specifically for operational analysis and mission support by the Office of Naval Intelligence’s OEUVRE program. Shortly after her creation and training she was transferred to Black Team, a Spartan-II detachment conducting Operation: BLOWBACK.
Before they could carry out their operation, the UNSC force crashed onto a desolate moon littered with ship wreckage after triggering Line Installation 1-4. This construct was a component of the Jat-Krula – a defensive system used to slow the spread of Flood-infested starships over one hundred thousand years earlier.
After the crash she assisted Black Team in their conflict with the installation’s monitor, 686 Ebullient Prism. Though nearly overwhelmed by the more advanced construct’s hacking attempts, she triumphed with a stratagem that distracted the monitor long enough for the Spartans to temporarily disable Ebullient Prism.
After her seven-year existence, the UNSC was set to legally terminate Iona to stave off the threat of the data corruption phenomenon known as “rampancy,” a condition that would eventually take hold of her functionality and persona, endangering all those around her. With one week remaining, Iona tried a last-ditch effort to save herself. She launched an unprecedented legal appeal against her own death sentence - a case that was watched very closely at not only the highest levels of human government, but by others with a very different agenda.
Though her appeal was essentially a fraud, a simulation created by the UEG to assess her meta-stability and test various legal theories, it did have real consequences in increasing the funding for rampancy-related research and bringing attention to the key role that smart AIs play in human activities.
