Summary

Spartan Vale has spent half of her life on the relative safety of Earth. While most Spartans are recruited from active field duty, Vale is an exception. Vale’s enlistment in Spartans comes after receiving stellar combat scores in training exercises despite minimal field experience.

History

Vale was eleven years old when her parents divorced. Her mother, whose star was on the rise in Navy signals intelligence, had received a promotion to captain and was reassigned to UNSC High Command (HIGHCOM) on Earth. During the trip to Earth, their ship’s slipspace drive failed. A six-day trip turned into a six-month odyssey as the ship limped toward inhabited space, dodging Covenant activity along the way. Over the ensuing months, Vale taught herself to understand the Sangheili language by listening to the recordings and comparing them to AI translations, in some cases correcting inaccuracies or improving existing translations.

Upon graduating from Sydney University, Vale followed in her mother’s footsteps and joined ONI, specializing in signals intelligence. She soon found herself immersed in the quagmire of post-war diplomacy as an ONI Special Liaison to the Unified Earth Government’s negotiations with an emerging Sangheili coalition led by the Arbiter. While her fluency in the Sangheili language and knowledge of their society was highly valued by her superiors, in practice it meant endless meetings with Elite diplomats.

OPERATION: FAR STORM

The bureaucratic monotony was interrupted in 2555, however, when she participated in a highly classified, ONI-driven operation to send a hybrid team of humans and Sangheili back to the Forerunner Ark installation. The operation was so sensitive that few outside the immediate circle of CINCONI (Commander-in-Chief of ONI) are even aware of its existence to this day. Even so, the communication skills and combat prowess Vale displayed throughout did not go unnoticed by ONI’s upper echelons.

SPARTAN-IV

After her experience at the Ark, Vale found it nearly impossible to return to her former routine. Looking for more, she entered the UNSC War Games, an inter-service event for soldiers to practice on combat decks similar to those used for training by Spartans. Though her combat training was minimal compared to most competitors, she placed in the top five percent through a combination of innate physical talent and quick thinking. As a result of this performance, and recommendations from the highest levels of ONI, Vale was approached by a Spartan branch seeking to cultivate warriors highly attuned to the complexities of a post-war threat environment.
