Akin in many ways to Halo: First Strike, this story serves as a glimpse into the aftermath of its preceding events, the novel dealing with the immediate fallout of what took place in Halo Infinite‘s campaign while embarking on its own new, self-contained adventure.

Edge of Dawn will ostensibly serve as a standalone story that any reader can jump into, whether this is your first Halo novel or if you’ve been following along for years.



Of course, December is a while away, so in the months leading up to publication here are some stories you can explore for maximum context around the Master Chief’s journey leading into this book and the mysteries of Zeta Halo.

The Halo World Championship will determine not only who gets the lion’s share of the $1,000,000 prize pool but, more importantly, the title of the best Halo team in the entire world! And once again, the HaloWC is the home for all fans in the Halo community, not just HCS fans. The sport of the future arrives today. Pick up those Gravity Hammers and Energy Swords and get ready for the most epic of faceoffs with the return of Grifball!

Originally a throwaway joke in the legendary Red vs Blue series, Rooster Teeth set out to make all of Grif’s dreams a reality and created Grifball with the tools at their disposal in Halo 3’s Forge.



The game is simple:



Smash enemies. Score goals.

If you make it to the middle and grab the ball, you are blessed with an Overshield and turn orange in homage to the one and only Grif. (That OS won’t save you from friendly fire so don’t get too close to your friends!) As the runner, your goal is so easy: just score it. All you gotta do is walk over the plant and get a point. How hard can it be? Not like there’s 7 other people on the court, 4 of whom are not on your team, in your way or anything.



Jokes aside, Grifball has three weapons:

<li>Gravity Hammer</li>



<li>Energy Sword</li>



<li>Ball (or Bomb…depends who you ask)</li>
</ul>



All of which combine to a delicate paper-rock-scissors-esque dance. Hammer beats sword, sword beats ball, ball beats hammer. But a lot of that will depend on your timing and your “dance” skills.



“But I have two left feet!” you say. Ahhh then it’s a good thing we’re not taking a spin around the ballroom floor isn’t it?



With regards to Grifball, “dancing” simply means knowing when to hold forward and smash away vs knowing when to backstep or sidestep around an enemy’s attack. Moving backwards away from an Energy Sword wielding Spartan for a moment might allow you the opportunity to step in and earn the kill.

We’ve already covered the Gravity Hammer-Energy Sword-Ball balance of the mode but let’s take a look at the rest of your arsenal.

All in first person….and third! Yes, Classic Grifball will be available in both first and third person modes for matchmaking so if you prefer being able to see over your shoulder, that’s definitely an option this time around!



“Classic” implies the availability of a “Not Classic” experience and you would be correct. Introducing Octane Grifball! Also available in both first and third persons, the move sets are the same as above with the addition of thrusters allowing you to zip around the court.

Generally speaking, a Grifball court is pretty straightforward – you’re battling in a boxy arena. Aesthetics are generally the biggest identifiable difference between courts with a few exceptions. (Raise your hand if you fell to your death on Grifball Naught in Halo 3 because you moved before the floor spawned in 🙋🏻‍♀️).

Okay maybe this is an interloper in the Halo 3 playlist but this is a classic throwback map with great lines of sight and pathways that lead to fun gameplay, and a nice oasis in the middle of the room. If you reflect, you may also remember this map from Halo: Reach.

In this overgrown temple, play centers around a vertical chamber of layered walkways. Teleport pads will take you to the upper reaches, but first you’ll have to determine which one goes where. Portals can be found on the map’s outer wings near equipment drops—but you might find yourself gunned down beneath the gaze of the mighty World Tree.

This lengthy mission invites you and your squad to raid a fortress alongside the Swords of Sanghelios. After clearing the fortified landing zone, you’ll navigate through a vent maze, experience Sangheili Speed, and puzzle your way out of a duel with an angry Blademaster.



To rejoin your Elite allies, you’ll have to escort Grunt VIPs, topple minibosses, choose your ending, and platform your way to the ramparts to sabotage a massive sentinel beam. If you manage to survive all that, there’s still a ropes course between you and a final showdown.

This stunning tribute to the Corbulo Academy from Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn boasts a nice open courtyard for Linear KOTH Firefight, plus plenty of Easter eggs for fans of the web series turned film. If you find time to catch your breath between waves, try finding the cadets’ mess hall and the dead Elite from that scene in the locker room.

An Unggoy deacon assigned to Minor Transgression, the Covenant missionary vessel that first encounters humanity. When a raid on a human freighter goes wrong, Dadab escapes with his Huragok companion, Lighter Than Some, to the cruiser Rapid Conversion, where he preaches the divine word of the Covenant—and finds ways to excuse his friend’s insatiable desire for tinkering.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Sif and Mack</h3>



An artificial intelligence aboard Harvest’s orbital station, the Tiara, and tasked with freight logistics for its shipyards. After encountering a distress beacon from the human freighter Horn of Plenty, Sif coordinates with fellow AI Mack—responsible for Harvest’s agricultural operations and heavy machinery—to evacuate the colony during the ensuing invasion.

Halo: Contact Harvest introduces us to Sergeant Johnson as a young man, 28 years before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. Over the course of the novel, Johnson takes part in the earliest events of the Human-Covenant War and becomes the hardened warfighter who eventually helps the Master Chief finish the fight.



The Minister of Fortitude is perhaps better known as the Prophet of Truth, a major antagonist in both Halo 2 and Halo 3. Chieftain Maccabeus is the uncle of Tartarus, who appears in both Halo 2 and as a minor character in Contact Harvest. (No spoilers! You’ll have to read the novel to learn what part he plays in its exciting events.)

To enter to win Halo audiobooks, simply join the <a href="https://discord.gg/halo" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">official Halo Discord server</a> and react to our new giveaway post in the #giveaways channel during the first week of each month.



UPDATE: The Halo: New Blood giveaway post will appear in the #giveaways channel on August 4, 2025. React to the post by Friday, August 8 for a chance to win!



Winners will be randomly selected later in the same month. Winners will be notified and tagged in a follow-up post by the GiveawayBot in the #giveaways channel of the Halo Discord server.
