The story of the Didact is one of deep tragedy, spanning countless millennia in the Halo universe—from the apex of the Forerunners’ civilization where he served as its protector, to his descent into madness as the Flood’s ancient game of vengeance culminated in the firing of Halo.

He was rage and fire. Cinder and storm. Burning remnants and echoes tearing madly over a barren landscape.



Star by star, world by world Never peace, never solace, never rest



Disjointed, wailing voices darted and dove, amplified in the vast desert echo chamber of dust and sand. Embers and fragments churned and seethed, united into a molten core by a thousand centuries of wrath and resentment.



A deep shadow has fallen The light shuns us Stop this! Stop the pain!



Unable to contain the sweltering maelstrom, the molten core bloated and suddenly burst, flinging heat and light outward into the shape of a fiery figure.



The heat dissipated. Black smoke replaced flame, floating and curling and swaying around the figure’s outline, gradually settling like a living cloak over the wide shoulders of a tall, gaunt form, a few stubborn embers still clinging to life at its tattered edges.



His rage spent for now, the figure rolled his shoulders, straightened his spine, and then tipped his head from side to side, feeling the pull of thick neck muscles and the satisfying snap of tendons. Pressure in his legs and joints manifested as his weight eased down into his body.



No—not quite a body. . .



The remnant of one, perhaps. A shade. A memory. A poor imitation.



One with enough composition, however, to cause his bare feet to sink into the sand and anchor him to whatever reality this was.



Weariness came with the physical weight, burrowing deeply into sinew and bone and wasted muscle. With effort, he lifted an arm, the cloak sliding back to reveal shriveled skin and a large,



almost skeletal hand tipped with brittle, sallow claws.



Denial and disgust rose with a sharp bite, some vague recollection telling him the view should be much different. He turned his hand and arm, seeing in his mind’s eye a more powerful and muscular physique, healthier gray skin endowed with fleshy-pink variation. . . .



Despite his initial reaction, the withered skin and desiccated muscle did not trouble him much. In fact, it felt . . . familiar, as though he had experienced the similarity before and all that was required to remedy the situation was to initiate—



Initiate . . . what?



Aya. He knew it. Could almost reach it . . .



The lost knowledge seemed to teeter on the precipice of revelation before it evaporated, leaving him unsteady, as if the sandy ground weakened beneath him. He rubbed at the vague ache in his right eye, a faint tease of identity skipping through his mind, but that too faded.



Try as he might, he could not mentally grasp a single important thing. Who he was, what he was, or how he came to be here, all seemed equally out of reach.



His cloak flapped as a line of tepid wind blew over his position, drawing attention to the dust and sand caught up in the current. As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but low sand dunes watched over by a dirty dull-blue sky and the bright flare of a sun hidden behind muddled clouds.



An arrogant snort flared softly through his nostrils, indicating a strong, ingrained confidence, one that told him not all was lost. Memory might escape him, but instinct and basic knowledge did not. His senses were intact, and his traits and emotions felt strong within him, some still gnawing and churning in his gut—indignation, contempt, bitterness, fury, obsession. But these he left alone for the time being.



No need to stir the serpent’s nest just yet . . .



He stared across the desolate landscape, contemplating his current situation. Had he been brought here? Forced here? Or had he fled here? Was his presence by chance or deliberate?



When weighed against the consuming rage he’d experienced earlier, one surety stood out above all others. It was certainly not by choice.



With nothing in any direction but the endless waste, his options were decidedly simplistic. Stay put or move on.



Without hesitation, he chose the latter, the sand folding over his feet as he started off in no particular direction.



The going was tedious and slow, his corporeal form stiff and uncooperative, though his bare skin on earth and the tiny grains pushing between his toes were oddly satisfying, the basic physical connection to the environment feeling very much like a novelty.



After trekking across several dunes, he paused to rest at a high point, revising his previous opinion. The sand was far from satisfying. His soles and toes were now raw, his body ached all over, and his mouth felt like tinder picked from the loose bark of the rataa trees that had once lined his family estate on Nomdagro.



The clarity of the vision struck harsh and quick. The force of it had him by the throat, stealing his breath.



Tree line. Children picking bark. A fire already smoking in the clearing by the white, chalky banks of the River Dweha . . .



The entire moment lay suspended.



His legs trembled and he dropped to one knee, gasping, struggling to keep hold of the vision, to place it in the context of his life, but it dodged just out of reach.



Disappeared. Gone. As though it had never existed.



Defeated, he collapsed with an angry growl, sitting in the sand and shaking his head, appalled at his own wretched incompetence. Heat crept up the back of his neck. Absently he rubbed the warm skin as his brow drew into a deep frown. His inability to capture the memory was discouraging, but there was also hope. It meant that his past was not completely lost. It was still there, under the surface.



More will come, he told himself, eyeing the next sand dune in his path—the tallest yet.



While exhaustion threatened to immobilize him, he was apparently nothing if not stubborn. Rousing his dwindling reserves, he got up and let gravity carry him in big strides down the dune’s long slope.



Once he made it to the next pile of sand, his head tipped back at its height. Such a menial, unnecessary, and time-consuming task when he could simply . . .



What? Wish himself to the top?



He braced against the now endless aches and pains plaguing his frail body, and with no small amount of grumbling began yet another climb—one sore foot in front of the other—until he finally reached the summit, out of breath, but rewarded for his efforts. A dark and dirty horizon stretched in the far distance, and within it or perhaps preceding it—it was too far to tell—a mote of blue glowed.



Finally, something out there in the sea of sand. Relief flooded him and he slumped to the ground.



Once down, he did not attempt to get back up. No matter what might lie beckoning ahead, it felt too good to stop and rest. Something told him that this too felt like a novelty. He pulled a foot closer to his body to knead the aching heel and arch, then cleared the sand between his toes. As he tended to the other foot, small dark specks appeared in the sky.



Instantly, there it was again, the precipice of knowledge. Along with an urge to assess the threat, to meet it with swift and decisive action. All he had to do was—



And . . . it was gone. Again.



“Aya,” he grunted in frustration as the specks drew close enough to see in detail. There were five creatures of flight with crested heads and long, imposing beaks. They were larger than him in both body and wingspan, and their dirty-brown color blended in well with the desert landscape. Double sets of large leathery wings protruded from each narrow torso and flapped rather slowly. As they glided overhead, the length of their tails was displayed and the—



Rangmejo



The word whispered with sudden clarity. He turned and watched their diminishing passage. Just as they faded from view, they suddenly dispersed into dust. Like a mirage. A dream.



He closed his eyes tightly, giving his head a hard shake, before looking again. But the avian creatures were indeed gone.



An unsettling sensation bloomed in the pit of his stomach. While he did not want to admit it, he knew. He’d known all along.



Wherever this was could not be based in the physical world. The landscape was not quite right, and neither was he—formed as he’d been from embers and emotion. His arms were wizened and old. His garb was wholly unfamiliar. Even his face, which he mapped with his fingers, felt bony and unrecognizable. He pinched his sallow cheeks and tugged at the tuft of hair on his head. The pain was real, at least. He studied his hands. All six fingers accounted for . . .



It was right, and yet not right. He felt solid, and yet . . . he was not whole.



Questions assailed him. None of which he could definitively answer. He must have had a past life, but there was nothing to prove his brief recollections were real or that they even belonged to him.



The mote of blue lingering far on the horizon was the only point of significance so far. If he had indeed been brought here, sent here, forced here—whatever the case might be—there must be a reason.



He stayed on the dune for a time, mildly contemplating his predicament while tending to his other aching foot. After his fingers grew tired, he lay back and put a hand behind his head, wondering if there had ever existed such a lackluster, dirty blue sky before.



Aya. But it was quiet here. Perhaps he should simply accept his fate, enjoy the peace, and wait for something to happen. Amusement tugged a corner of his mouth. If he did have a past life, he was certain such an inane and useless thought had never crossed his mind.



Gradually, his mind drifted. As sleep took over, he wondered in what reality he might awaken.

He dreamed of fire.



From flesh to bone, it ate away at him, ripping him apart one layer at a time, tearing and burning.



Stripped, pulled asunder, until even his consciousness peeled free, and he was nothing but writhing, screaming embers.

Halo: Epitaph, the next novel by acclaimed author Kelly Gay, releases on February 27, 2024.



Ahead of the Didact’s long-anticipated return in Epitaph, set in the aftermath of Halo 4 and Halo: Escalation’s events where the Forerunner commander was defeated by the Master Chief and torn from the physical world, we have put together a summary of major appearances and events that have defined the Didact’s journey throughout the Halo universe.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ORIGINS</h2>





The Didacts—both the original and Bornstellar, his imprinted duplicate—are among the most tragic characters in the Halo universe.



“Didact” is a name Halo fans first became familiar with in 2007, during the Iris alternate-reality game which connected with the Terminals in Halo 3. These texts gave us a series of glimpses into some of the events that transpired around the fall of the Forerunners’ civilization, featuring an enigmatic figure who was responsible for lighting the spark that would ignite the galaxy, burning our cosmic cradle of thinking life to defeat the Flood. In time, we would come to know this particular incarnation as Bornstellar-Makes-Eternal-Lasting, the IsoDidact.



The original—the Ur-Didact, named Shadow-of-Sundered-Star—was conceived in part by the unparalleled mind of <a href="https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/greg-bear-in-memoriam">the late and legendary Greg Bear</a>, who detailed this Forerunner’s adventures, trials, and descent into madness within the pages of the Forerunner Saga: <a href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Halo-Cryptum/Greg-Bear/HALO/9781982111755">Cryptum</a>, <a href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Halo-Primordium/Greg-Bear/HALO/9781982111779">Primordium</a>, and <a href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Halo-Silentium/Greg-Bear/HALO/9781982111816">Silentium</a>.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THE FORERUNNER SAGA</h2>





“You are what you dare.” ~ Halo: Cryptum



The Didact’s story began for us with his fateful reawakening on Earth at the hands of the young, treasure-seeking Bornstellar—along with his two human companions, Chakas and Riser—as the existential threat posed by the Flood and the rogue AI Mendicant Bias approached its dire terminus.



Within these books, we learned of the Didact’s unconventional marriage to the Librarian and the death of their children in the war against the ancient human Ancestors. We learned of his meeting with the creature known as the Primordial; his commissioning of the shield worlds, his opposition to the construction of Halo, and the political conflict which followed with the greed-driven Master Builder.



The Didact would guide Bornstellar for a time as they investigated the aftermath of all that the old warrior had missed over the millennia in which he had been exiled within a Cryptum. They discovered that the Primordial had been released from its prison on Charum Hakkor, the former Ancestor capital world, before finding themselves in the middle of a San’Shyuum uprising that would be swiftly put down by one of the Master Builder’s terrible ringworld weapons.



Though they would end up captured, the Didact imprinted his consciousness—his memories and wisdom—upon Bornstellar, who would go on to assume command of the Forerunner military in the final years of the Flood War as the IsoDidact.

“A deep shadow has fallen over everything Forerunner. When I was pulled up from all that, pulled out of the Cryptum and revived… I couldn’t remember. But now I do—in part. Horror brought it back. The Gravemind returned it to me. It forced me to listen.” ~ Halo: Silentium



But the original Didact was discarded, with many believing he had simply been executed by the Master Builder. He was, in fact, placed aboard a derelict ship and marooned in a region of space fully infested by the Flood. It was here that he would meet with the Primordial once more.



This beast had also assumed a new form, that of a Gravemind, and the torture it imposed upon the Didact filled him with the vengeance of the Precursors—the very beings who had seeded the galaxy with life. Millions of years ago, the Forerunners had risen up against their creators and drove them to extinction, and the survival strategies some of the Precursors sought eventually culminated in their reincarnation… in the twisted form of the Flood.



The Gravemind repurposed the Forerunners’ greatest warrior into a weapon to sow chaos during their darkest hour, and so the Didact was returned to the ecumene where he sought to find a solution to the Flood that would not involve wiping out all life in the galaxy.



Attempting to gain immunity to the Flood, the Didact performed a mutation on himself, but the failed procedure warped his appearance into a dark mirror of what the Gravemind had done to him.



And so, he turned to the Composer.

“Didact, if the Composer is our final hope to defeat the Flood… no Promethean would resist.” ~ Halo 4, Terminal 5: Knights



This machine was capable of extracting the essence of an organic being and converting it into machine data. Of the many purposes it had been used for in the past—on the humans as punishment, on Forerunners in an attempt to achieve immortality, and on Flood victims in an effort to rid them of the infection—all saw horrific defects. But the Warrior-Servants who were loyal to the Didact submitted themselves to the device, losing their physical forms to become Promethean Knights.



Though these war machines secured several victories against the parasite, their numbers were too few to be a viable alternative to Halo. As a result, the Didact turned the Composer on the human populations that had been preserved by his wife, the Librarian, invoking her terrible wrath.



Pursuing her husband to the shield world Requiem, she convinced Endurance-of-Will—the Didact’s former lover—that he must be exiled once more. After being incapacitated by the Librarian, she imprisoned him within a Cryptum at the heart of his planet, commanded his Prometheans to guard him, and left behind a personality imprint of herself to carry out plans she had for the future.

The Librarian had intended for the Didact to awaken from ages of meditation with his mind healed, whereupon he would inherit the Janus Key—a galactic cartographer for Forerunner technology. With this, she hoped he would serve as a teacher for humanity, who had been chosen to inherit the Mantle of Responsibility after the firing of Halo and the reseeding of the galaxy.



But this plan would go awry at the end of all things when the Gravemind revealed its final twist of the knife.



The firing of Halo would not just wipe out all thinking life in the galaxy, but it would burn the Domain too, leaving the Didact to consciously stew in a hundred millennia of silence and madness.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">HALO 4</h2>





“So fades the great harvest of my betrayal.” ~ Halo 4, Forerunner



When the Master Chief and Cortana were sent to Requiem, they unwittingly released the Didact from his prison and he resumed his efforts to reclaim the Composer and turn it on his old enemy. This was no longer an effort to stop the Flood, but to contain the threat posed by humanity—a species he deemed unworthy of inheriting the Mantle, per the plans of his wife, the Librarian.



Though he would be prevented from assimilating all of Earth with the Composer, he succeeded in harvesting seven million human essences that formed the basis of the Promethean army that Jul ‘Mdama would utilize over the next year.



The Didact, however, was sent plunging into a slipspace portal, though this confrontation would exact a heavy toll as Cortana sacrificed herself to ensure the Master Chief survived the encounter.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">HALO: ESCALATION</h2>





“You would fire the Halo. Just to eliminate me?” ~ Halo: Escalation, Issue #10



Returning to Earth, the Master Chief learned of Promethean activity on Gamma Halo and was reunited with his fellow Spartans of Blue Team to investigate. There, they discovered that Spartan Black Team had been slaughtered, and a site known as the Composer’s Abyss housed a portal that linked to the world of Clinquant—a forge for the Composers, where six new devices had been procured for the Didact.



Intending to unify the Composer with Gamma Halo and fire the ring on Earth, the Didact met his match when the Master Chief—with the help of monitor 859 Static Carillon—managed to trap him in the ring’s control room and eject that section of the ring, sending it on a collision course with the Composer’s Forge.



The unstable detonation of neural physics from the six Composers tore the Didact from the physical world, burning away his flesh and containing the threat he posed to the galaxy…



But this would not be the end for him.

I want to ask her what it is that she wants. Not what she hopes to achieve or the responsibilities she has taken upon her shoulders, but her own desire, her heart’s wanting.



But I realize I do not have to ask this. I already know. “Can the Didact find peace?”

Welcome back to the Community Corner, the series where we spotlight and interview individuals in the Halo community about all things to do with (you guessed it) Halo—and their specific niches as creators.



Last month, <a href="https://www.halowaypoint.com/news/community-corner-alyek">we were joined by Halo Grassroots member and streamer Alyek</a> to learn about her journey with Halo over the years and reminisce about memorable moments at HCS.



This month, as we’re less than two short weeks away from the release of Halo: Epitaph, the next novel by Kelly Gay that will see the return of the Didact, it seemed only fitting to speak with an artist who is well known for her stunning illustrations of the Forerunner era, and shares a similar handle with a beloved character within that mythos: Isodidacta.

Welcome, Eva! Thank you for taking the time to talk with us about all things Halo. But first of all, introduce yourself—who are you, what do you do as part of the Halo community, and where can we find you online?



Hello, I like to go by Eva on social media. I make fanart in my free time. Halo has many facets that have yet to be explored visually—those areas of ambiguity are where a majority of my inspiration thrives.

How did your great journey with Halo begin?



I was introduced to Halo 2 at the age of eight. After a long day of running across the desert with my friend and sibling, we came back into my friend’s trailer to cool off… where her mother was playing Halo 2 on the couch in their living room. In silent awe, we all watched her play.



Finally, she let us take turns playing Slayer. We spent the next hour taking turns shooting at each other poorly. I left their home completely enamored by Halo.



Later that year, my father bought us the console and game for Christmas. That’s where everything began for me.



I have a feeling that I might know the answer to this, but are there any specific areas of the series that you really gravitate towards—campaign and story, multiplayer, the expanded universe, Forge, etc?



Haha, yes. Although I love all of these aspects, the story and campaign are where I mostly gravitate towards. Halo is incredibly rich with storytelling.

What are some of the things that really draws you into the Forerunner elements of the Halo universe?



Greg Bear’s writing drew me in. I had always loved Halo, but his work brought an entirely new perspective to the Halo universe for me.



What are some of your favorite pieces of Halo media and why?



Silentium is currently my favorite book, while Halo 2 is my favorite game.



Silentium has a magnificent sense of scale. Reading through the various perspectives of those final events was horrifying. How this book concludes the trilogy is compelling.



Halo 2 was my first experience with a Halo game. The storytelling was impressive, following the Arbiter through his story was a pivotal experience for me as a child.

Do you have a favorite Halo character—both in general and a favorite character to draw?



Many characters in Halo have left impressions on me for different reasons, but my favorite to draw are the characters who don’t have a current presence in the games. I want to flesh them out and help bring a face to them for others. I enjoy trying to capture their personality. There is a lot of artistic freedom in the fringes of Halo lore!



Tell us a bit about your journey as an artist—how did you discover your love for it and what are some of your major inspirations?



I have been drawing my entire life, but my parents are responsible for encouraging my passion. I wouldn’t have gotten this far without them.



A majority of my early inspiration came directly from concept art. How much thought and effort is put behind every design we see in the final product.



<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/47857688@N08/sets/72157629321027031/">Adam Adamowicz</a> and his work on The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles made a huge impression on me at a young age. Currently there are too many sources of inspiration I draw from to list specifically!





Do you listen to music when you go into “artist mode”? What Halo tracks are on the drawing playlist?



I listen to a lot of music, but game soundtracks work wonders for staying focused. Some of my favorite Halo tracks are:



Requiem, Nemesis, Legacy, Awakening, Warrior World, The Beauty of Cortana, Deference for Darkness, Neon Night, Impart, and A Spartan Rises.



Do you have a favorite medium to work with—and one you’re eager to explore working with more? For instance, you’ve done some amazing short animations for some of your Bornstellar pieces!



Thank you. Animation is an incredibly useful skill to have, and one I am still learning.



Currently, digital art is the dominant medium for me. A few paintings do begin as small pencil sketches, before they’re painted over in Photoshop.

How do you think your art has evolved over time?



My art has evolved a lot over time. I had no experience with digital art until I was 18, when I was given my first laptop and tablet. It was after the artbook for Destiny released in 2014. I knew I wanted to pursue game design as a career and those tools where critical for that path—gaining access to this new medium it was incredibly freeing for me.





Do you have any words of wisdom to share with other artists out there who might just be getting started?



I have many, too many to fit here.



There’s an abundance of free resources available online to explore. Tutorials, programs, and even mentoring from senior artists. You do not need a secondary education to pursue a creative career in the game industry.



I had the pleasure of meeting you at the Halo World Championship event back in October after having shared around some of your artwork internally and making it our mission to tell you how much we loved it! What was the experience of being in the same hall as Keith David like?



It was a pleasure to meet you as well! And thank you, I do appreciate that.



It was great to see Keith, Jen, and Steve on-stage. Their skill is phenomenal. Sunrise on Sanghelios was one of the highlights of that event for me. I’m grateful to have seen it in person.

What are some of your favorite pieces of Halo artwork?



All work done by <a href="https://www.artstation.com/sparth">Sparth</a>, <a href="https://conceptartworld.com/news/halo-4-concept-art-by-paul-richards/">Paul Richards</a>, <a href="https://www.artstation.com/robogabo">Gabo Garza</a>, and <a href="https://www.daniolart.com/#/work/">Daniel Chavez</a>. Their expertise and instinct have left Halo with a library of remarkable art.



What’s are some of your favorite pieces of artwork that you’ve done (be it from Halo or something else)? 



My current favorite Halo piece has to be the first-person perspective of Bronstellar’s hand. It was incredibly rushed, but I’m pleased with the result. It’s simple and efficient. The early chapters of Cryptum will always elicit a bittersweet feeling for me.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.



I think people who aren’t familiar with me could find this interesting? For the last five years I’ve worked in the gaming industry as a concept artist which practically dominates my life day-to-day and makes drawing in my free time inconvenient. All the fanart I’ve made has come from a stubborn passion!

Back again already? Well, of course you are—we did just have a two-episode premiere for Season Two, after all!



Let’s dive right into episode two, ‘Sword.’

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">EPISODE SUMMARY: SWORD</h2>



Doctor Catherine Halsey is sat at a table in what appears to be a comfortable living room where she is visited by a young girl who brings her “gifts” and they begin to play a board game. As Halsey questions the young attendant about the man behind all this, the young girl’s nose begins to bleed and she seemingly loses consciousness.

Following the events of Season One where Riz-028 was critically wounded during the final battle against the Covenant at Raas Kkhotskha, Kai-125 finds her still in discomfort and struggling due to her injuries—but Riz insists on training.



Riz trains with Louis, a blind instructor who can tell that she is struggling. Louis tells her that she won’t be able to serve forever and that there are other ways to live, encouraging her to think about life beyond being a Spartan, which she flippantly says is a life that doesn’t matter—something she immediately regrets saying, as Louis is a “washout” from the Spartan program.



When conducting a “ring the bell” training exercise with Silver Team in her Mjolnir armor, Riz is prevented from completing her objective by the Master Chief after firing a shot to make her fall while climbing. The Chief orders them to go again, but when Kai interrupts to point out Riz’s condition—concerned that she is being pushed too far—Riz insists that she is fine. However, though Riz gets close to ringing the bell at the top of the cliffs, she loses her grip and hits her back on the long fall down. The Chief orders her to get back up, insisting that this is necessary because the Covenant are training for something, before ordering them to go again.



Later, Riz waits with Louis for the man he says saved him when he washed out of the Spartan program. Louis relates his experience after the augmentation procedures that turned them into super-soldiers, saying that he felt invincible at first, but over time he began to experience darkness at the edges of his vision that he kept quiet, before losing his sight altogether—the last thing he remembers seeing being how proud and beautiful he saw his fellow Spartans to be.



STANDBY MODE



The Master Chief looks at the Spartan deployment roster and sees that Silver Team are being held on standby, confiding to Kai that Ackerson believes something is wrong with him and revealing that he saw Makee on Sanctuary. Kai denies the possibility of this, as she shot Makee herself on Raas Kkhotskha.



Seeing that Cobalt Team’s status is also set to standby, the Chief becomes aggravated and seeks out James Ackerson. Ackerson mockingly says that as far as he knows Spartans never die, prompting the Chief to demand that he clear Silver Team for action or he will find somebody else who will, but Ackerson makes it clear that the Office of Naval Intelligence is running the show—and that he represents ONI.



Taking a more direct tact, Ackerson says that the Chief’s account of events on Sanctuary are dubious and could not be corroborated by Corporal Perez, upon the Chief’s insistence that he speak with her, only to be told that she has no recollection of the events that transpired. The Chief says that she must be lying, to which Ackerson asks the Chief to put himself in his position. Given the Chief’s recent behavior, would he trust him?



The Chief concludes that Ackerson can’t win this war against the Covenant without Silver Team, which Ackerson confirms, pointedly saying that he—and everybody else—needs the Master Chief. But at the end of the day, John is just “a guy in the suit.”



UNWELCOME VISITS

Dr. Halsey plays a board game with her young attendant, who has seemingly recovered, but as Halsey asks once more who the man that sent her was, the girl’s nose begins bleeding again. Halsey tells the girl that she is dying and insists on her saying the man’s name, but the girl dies before she can say anything.



Meanwhile, the Master Chief pays a visit to Corporal Perez at her family home and is invited in for dinner. Perez relates her story to him about what she remembers: she heard something when the comms went down and could feel that something was with them, but she didn’t see anything—and then all of her fellow Marines were killed. She asks the Chief to explain why she wasn’t killed as well, explaining that this was why she didn’t tell Ackerson, because she was given a medal and doesn’t know what it’s for beyond simply surviving.



The Chief tells Perez that what she heard was a message from the Covenant and that it will happen again, and then confides that she will think about her squad every day, see their faces when she least expects, and that it doesn’t get better—only further away.



Back with Halsey, Ackerson meets with her in person as the body of her attendant—a flash cloned girl—is taken away. Halsey asks where Cortana and the Master Chief are, but Ackerson introduces her to a new flash cloned girl named Julia who will serve as Halsey’s next attendant. Departing the room, it becomes clear that Halsey is being held inside a simulated prison cell.



UNDER COVER



On the Rubble, Kwan goes out to steal food and attempts to remove the tracking tag used on indentured servants from her ear. Caught by several men hunting her down, Kwan escapes into a service duct and kills the two people hunting her.



Laera wants to take Soren’s ship to find him, but the crew that abandoned him tell her that it needs repairs that will take at least a couple of days. Laera insists that Soren is alive and reprimands them for not saving him themselves, as he would never have left them behind.



Kwan returns to the cavern where she tells Kessler she must leave because people are looking for her. Kessler says that Soren will protect them when he gets back, to which Kwan says that he isn’t coming back.



PROBLEMATIC PROBABILITIES

Ackerson enters the chamber where the smaller part of the Forerunner keystone artifact from Season One is still being held, remaining inert to his touch. Cortana then appears and Ackerson asks if she has made any progress with the problem that he gave her to solve, to which Cortana says that there is a ninety-seven percent probability based on the data he has given her.



Asking if there are any viable strategies that she would recommend to prevent this outcome, Cortana states that all simulations return the same result regardless of any action taken, leading Ackerson to conclude that there is nothing to be done. As Ackerson departs, he says that he will come back, but Cortana notes that—according to the simulations—he won’t be able to.



FLIGHTPLAN



The Master Chief attempts to track Cobalt Team’s mission, but is told that no missions are associated with them. Cross-checking missions concerning communications relays, two results for active missions are returned: one on Meridian, and another located in the Epsilon Eridani system—here on Reach itself. The Chief surmises that Cobalt Team never actually left the planet.



Taking a Condor with Silver Team under the pretense of a training mission, the Chief tells them they are actually going to Visegrad Relay, where Cobalt Team was sent, and they’re going to get them back. Kai asks if they’re cleared for combat, to which the Chief lies and confirms that they are. When Kai inquires as to the specific nature of their mission, the Chief simply responds: “The Covenant is on Reach.”



At Sword Base on Reach, a group of Marines move through a darkened corridor, but they are all cut down by a Sangheili warrior. Makee then appears, and asks the Sangheili to open the door, finding the other part of the keystone artifact within.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CORE CONNECTIONS</h2>



The Spartan roster and the scene where the Master Chief tracks the missions that other Spartan teams are on will return some undoubtedly familiar names to those familiar with the SPARTAN-II program.



Among the names listed are Black Team and Omega Team, who have both appeared throughout the expanded universe of Halo’s core canon.

Black Team (composed of Margaret-053, Roma-143, Otto-031, and Victor-101)made their debut in the Halo: Evolutions anthology novel, specifically in the story ‘Blunt Instruments’ where they were sent to take out a station that would prevent Helium-3 from being supplied to the Covenant ships blockading the colony Tribute.



They were also the primary focus of the comic series Halo: Blood Line, and later appeared in Halo: Escalation’s ‘The Next 72 Hours’ arc where they met their end at the hands of the Forerunner commander known as the Didact.

Omega Team (composed of August-099, Leon-011, and Robert-025) was first introduced to us in the beloved announcement teaser for Halo Wars back in 2006, where a group of Spartans appear at the end with the line: “This is Spartan Group Omega. If they want war, we’ll give ‘em war.”



Omega would go on to appear briefly during the campaign of Halo Wars when the UNSC Spirit of Fire helps evacuate civilians on the colony world Arcadia, and they were also hero units that could be deployed in Halo Wars 2’s multiplayer.

Silver Debrief: Sword

The time has come. Season Two of the Halo television series is here with an explosive two-episode premiere, launching us straight into the action with new and familiar faces as the Covenant threat escalates for humanity.



That means it’s time to bring the Silver Debrief out of cryo. This blog series will release every week alongside new episodes, featuring episode summaries, links to all the amazing additional programming to do with the series (like Declassified), and more.



Be warned: here there will be spoilers for these episodes, and in Halo Infinite there will be spoils in the form of Silver Team’s helmets—but more on that later!

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">EPISODE SUMMARY: SANCTUARY</h2>



The episode begins with John-117, the Master Chief, on an operating table following the events of Season One’s finale. As he is tended to by medical personnel, he is saved by having the Cortana implant extracted from his head.



OPERATION: SHEPHERD

On the planet Sanctuary, Silver Team assists the UNSC as they attempt to evacuate a settlement with Condor dropships due to an impending Covenant attack, but some of the civilian refugees refuse to leave—having been previously relocated from other Covenant invasions.



Keeping overwatch with Vannak-134, Kai-125 spots lights flickering in the fog on a clifftop and the Master Chief uses a grappleshot to investigate, discovering that communications in this area are suffering from significant interference. After encountering a group of Marines who were stationed at the communications outpost, they are snatched through the fog one by one by an invisible enemy until only the Master Chief and a young woman (Corporal Perez) are left.



A Sangheili lunges at the Chief with an energy sword and is quickly dispatched, but it is quickly followed by more. In the fighting that ensues, the Chief loses track of Perez—eventually finding her injured among the bodies of her fellow Marines. The Chief sees more Sangheili figures appear out of active camouflage, but they retreat and depart; through the fog, the Chief sees a familiar human figure among them.



The Covenant begin glassing Sanctuary, unleashing devastating lances of plasma upon the planet from orbit, wiping out many of the civilians and UNSC personnel. Kai and Vannak help the civilians aboard their Condors, some of which are shot down as they depart, and the Chief returns carrying Perez. The leader of the outpost—The Mother—and her entourage approach the Spartan, telling him to find his fate and that she has seen his death coming soon.



UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

Back on Reach at the FLEETCOM headquarters, Silver Team debriefs with the recently promoted Admiral Jacob Keyes who informs the Spartans that Covenant attacks have been increasing across the Outer Colonies.



The Master Chief insists that this case was different because the Covenant were already present before they glassed the planet, asking why they would invade the planet if their intention was just to glass it anyway. Keyes says that the Office of Naval Intelligence will conduct an analysis, and as the Chief makes to argue his case further they are interrupted by the arrival of James Ackerson, who introduces himself as Dr. Catherine Halsey’s replacement as director of the Spartan program.



Later, as the Chief heads to Ackerson’s office, he spots Corporal Perez in a room nearby. Having researched the new Spartan program director, the Chief gives respect to Ackerson for having served in combat, then reiterates that he understands the Covenant as an enemy that acts with meaning and intention. He believes that the Sangheili there were training, but he doesn’t know for what.



Ackerson seeks to undermine the Chief by questioning his mental state following the events of Season One where Dr. Halsey was implicated in crimes concerning unauthorized procedures and projects, such as the creation of Cortana—an illegal artificial intelligence that was implanted into the head of the UNSC’s most important strategic asset, the Master Chief himself.



COBALT TEAM

Silver Team banters with the Spartans of Cobalt Team, who have notably not removed their pellets, as they complain about Ackerson sending them on a babysitting mission to escort a tech team looking to repair a communications relay in a distant system. This gets the Chief’s attention, leading him to confront Ackerson once more for not briefing Cobalt Team on what happened on Sanctuary.



Ackerson then throws the Chief’s mission report into doubt, questioning how he could have prevailed against so many Sangheili warriors alone who then disappeared, portraying the Spartan as a victim of Halsey’s experiments that have compromised him, meaning that he cannot authorize them for combat missions. The Chief relents, but asks that Ackerson just tell Cobalt Team what they’re walking into.



Heading into the city, the Chief secretly meets with Margaret Parangosky, who is no longer serving as an admiral following the events of Season One. She tells the Chief that he will find Ackerson unresponsive to his theories and that nobody wants to believe that the nature of the Covenant War is changing. Parangosky tells the Chief to pursue evidence of the Covenant’s activities and bring it to her, providing him with a tracking device so she can find him when he activates it, and when the Chief asks what she’ll do for him she says that she will believe him.



A PIRATE’S LIFE

On the Rubble, a network of habitable hollowed-out asteroids where piracy thrives, the former Spartan known as Soren and his wife Laera observe the selection process for refugees seeking asylum through indentured servitude based on the skills they can contribute. One refugee from Harvest captures Soren’s attention when he claims to know the location of Catherine Halsey, which Soren publicly dismisses but directs one of his men to go after him.



Upon returning home, they find their son Kessler playing with a toy of the Master Chief. Laera criticizes Soren for playing the role of pirate king dreaming of bringing Dr. Halsey to justice while the galaxy burns around them. Laera says that the other syndicate families don’t fear Soren the way they used to and suggests that the three of them should go away, but Soren insists that they don’t run.



Soren meets with Felix and departs with his crew, the Harvest refugee relates a story about a salvage job where he saw a cryo tube containing Dr. Halsey when a side panel fell off a crate before the ship went missing, with Felix being the only one who knows the course it plotted. An alarm interrupts them as they find the wrecked remains of the ship, and Soren orders Felix to accompany him alone to investigate.



As Felix recounts his knowledge of Halsey’s actions and questions Soren’s past as a Spartan, he surmises that the pirate leader’s investment in capturing her isn’t about the money but what she did to him. Upon finding the crate that Felix claimed held Halsey’s cryo tube, Soren begins questioning Felix’s story, only to see his crew steal his ship and jump out of the system, stranding him. Finding the crate empty, Soren is the surrounded by troops that were hidden in the room and Felix states that he is under arrest for the crimes of piracy, kidnapping, extortion, and treason.



THE MONSTER

After conversing with an AI that takes on the form of Cortana and Dr. Halsey, the Chief fears that a piece of him is missing now and recalls seeing the figure of Makee on Sanctuary, saying to him “You should have stayed with me.”



As Soren’s crew returns to the Rubble, Laera sees that Soren is not among them and fears that her husband is either lost or dead.



A Sangheili observes a vast fleet of Covenant ships rising through the clouds, prepared to embark on their next conquest.



Kessler enters an asteroid cavern where he is greeted by Kwan Ha, who tells him about an ancient monster that is coming—markings on the cavern wall showing a circular maw…

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CORE CONNECTIONS</h2>



“Core connections” is a section that explores some of the cool details and connections the Silver Timeline draws with Halo’s core canon.



At the FLEETCOM headquarters when Silver Team debriefs with Admiral Keyes, they learn that several planets have been lost: Madrigal, Estuary, and FLEETCOM believes that Fumirole is next.



We of course spent a lot of time on Madrigal in Season One, but Estuary and Fumirole are names that might sound familiar to lore fans out there.

Estuary made an appearance in Halo 2: Anniversary’s Terminals (Terminal 3 – ‘ONI File: Particular Justice’) as one of the seven planets that was glassed by Thel ‘Vadamee during his campaign against humanity as Supreme Commander of the Fleet of Particular Justice.

Fumirole will no doubt be more familiar, as it was the setting for the (still jaw-dropping) Halo: Reach live action trailer ‘Deliver Hope.’



Noble Team fought here in April 2552 with the objective of destroying a Covenant battlecruiser, Sanctity of Purification, by detonating a Fury tactical nuclear weapon from inside the ship. When Kat-B320 is critically injured by a Banshee, Thom-A293—the original Noble Six on the team—takes the bomb and uses his jetpack to get it to the finish line, sacrificing himself in the process.
