<p>Happy new year! Just in time for Year 3 of HCS, we’ve made a
significant number of updates to the maps in Ranked Arena in an effort to
foster a stronger competitive balance, address player feedback, and breathe
some life into these maps many of which have had the same layout and stale meta
since the game’s launch. These changes are NOW LIVE in Ranked Arena and Custom
Games.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">All Maps:</h2>



<ul><li><strong>Deleted many scenic dynamic objects:</strong> Many maps use small set pieces of scenery to immerse the player. These objects, however, have caused network-related instabilities that impact player movement on the map. (This excludes Forbidden which did not have scenic dynamic objects.)</li><li><strong>“Red racked” equipment:</strong> Before today’s update, when a piece of equipment was picked up, a new one started spawning immediately. With this update, the equipment must be depleted of its charges or despawn in order for a new one to start spawning. This will reduce potential for imbalanced scenarios where equipment is stacked on an individual player or a team. At the same time, this will add an additional layer of strategy with players have more control over when the new equipment will spawn.</li><li><strong>Custom Games:</strong> The ranked version of the maps now have their own file names in Custom Games with the naming convention of, “[MAP NAME] Ranked”. For example, “Live Fire Ranked”.</li></ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Aquarius </h2>



<p>Aquarius was one of the maps we felt needed the biggest changes. There were items that were super valuable, and also items that were not valuable. Additionally, many CTF matches are ending on time instead of score, and we wanted to bring that in line with the other modes.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Argyle</h2>



<p>For Argyle, we needed to find ways to promote flag scoring so that games end on score vs time more often, as well as address some feedback around weapons on map.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Empyrean</h2>



<p>We felt very few changes were needed to promote games ending on score instead of time for CTF, and to address some player feedback.</p>

<p>As a new map we only wanted to make sure the equipment charges were consistent across the whole ranked experience.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Live Fire</h2>



<p>This was another map we felt needed the most amount of work in order to address feedback, improve the overall balance (including King of the Hill), and provide new gameplay challenges for players and teams to learn and solve.</p>

<p>Much like Live Fire, Recharge was in need a larger overhaul to address balance issues and provide a fresh experience for players, particularly with King of the Hill.  </p>

<p>For Streets, most of the feedback stemmed from the feeling of there being too much power on the map in the form of strong weapons in more ideal to use locations. We wanted to address that feedback while also again providing new ways for players and teams to play on the map.</p>

<p>The main objective with Solitude was to update King of the Hill to address balance and player feedback particularly around the “snow ball” effect on the map. </p>

<p>For nearly two years we’ve watched the greatest <em>Halo</em> players on Earth wield their Battle Rifles to duke it out at over a dozen global events for millions of dollars in the HCS, as well as each of you inside the various ranked playlists inside the game. This has been some of the most amazing <em>Halo</em> we’ve watched—thank you.</p>



<p>And now, nearly two years later, Season 5 for <em>Halo Infinite</em> launches on October 17 and with it brings big changes to ranked—and we couldn’t be more excited for you to play and compete.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>BANDIT EVO</strong></h2>

<p>When the M392 Bandit was introduced in Season 3, we knew it had the potential to capture the hearts of the competitive community. Sure enough, it did. And we heard loud and clear from you that competitive <em>Halo</em> needed a single-shot fire starting gun, something that made you giddy when you got a Perfect kill, something that made you jump out of your chair when you turned around and outgunned someone who had the drop on you, something that rewarded your individual skill more.</p>



<p>That something is
the Bandit Evo.</p>



<p>The M392 Bandit that shipped with Season 3 was designed to be an on-map pickup weapon in the “Assault Rifle” class, and we felt it fit that role just right. However, if we wanted to adapt the Bandit to be the starting gun, it needed a complete overhaul as it was going to fill the utility role.</p>



<p>Competitive <em>Halo</em> requires a utility starting weapon, it is the cornerstone of the entire experience. You need to be able to fight off your spawn even when your opponent has all the power on the map. This meant it needed range so we gave the new Bandit Evo a 1.6x sight so now you can knock that sniper out of scope. It also needed to be reliable in its firing mechanics so we’ve drastically reduced the bloom and recoil. It also needed to fit in a similar time-to-kill to that of the BR so that players always have a chance to come back in a fight and so we’ve decreased the rate of fire a bit. At the same time, it’s important that weapons are balanced <em>against </em>the Bandit Evo, so of course it has descope.</p>

<p>Additionally, the red reticle range has been increased for both Bandit Evo and M932 Bandit.</p>



<p>When you combine all of these elements together, you get the new starting weapon for Ranked Playlists as well as the Halo Championship Series in Year 3.</p>

<p>Now, some of you might be thinking, “Well, I liked the original Bandit, what does this mean for that gun?” Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. The original M392 Bandit with the normal tuning will still be available in the game and across the various social playlists it’s featured in.</p>



<p>Additionally, all of your Bandit customization will work for the M392 Bandit and the Bandit Evo—you just need to customize it once and the game will automatically apply the changes to both Bandits for you when you load into with a Bandit Evo and pick up an M392 Bandit.</p>



<p>With a new
starting weapon in ranked, this is a great opportunity to jump back in and
prove yourself in time for the Year 3 of HCS kicking off in 2024.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>EXTRACTION</strong></h2>

<p><em>Halo 4</em>’s mode, Extraction, returns to the franchise for the first time in <em>Halo Infinite</em>. Extraction is a tried-and-true, battle-tested game mode that went through the rigors of many tournaments from 2012-2014 and we’re excited to bring it forward to <em>Halo Infinite</em>.</p>



<p>How does it work? In Extraction, teams must enter a zone and plant the Extraction device. Once planted, the device will take 60 seconds to extract and the planting team must defend it while their opponents need to convert the device to Extract for themselves and reset the 60 second timer. Once a team successfully extracts the device, they will score 1 point and the zone will then move to a new pre-determined location. The team that scores 4 points, wins.</p>



<p>Extraction will be played on the following maps in the Ranked Arena playlist when Season 5 launches:</p>

<p>Extraction will be
a totally new dynamic to the ranked and HCS rotation and we can’t wait to see
all of the strategies start to form when it releases on October 17.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>FORBIDDEN</strong></h2>

<p>Introducing Forbidden, a brand-new <em>Halo Infinite</em> 4v4 map built for ranked play. Forbidden is not a remake, but rather a totally new design that harkens back to classic <em>Halo</em> with not only its map layout but also its artistic approach. Forbidden is a symmetrical map and will be featured in the Ranked Arena playlist with Capture the Flag (3 Captures to Win).</p>



<p>In terms of power weapons and power ups on the map, each team receives access to a S7 Sniper which is well suited for the map with its longer sightlines but distinct cover and routes to traverse through the map. </p>

<p>Forbidden will indeed be going into the HCS rotation for Year 3, and we’ll announce the final rotation in January before the competitions kick off. There will be some map and mode combinations rotated out in order to make room for Extraction and Forbidden.</p>



<p>Forbidden will be making its way into the Ranked Playlist in the coming weeks after Season 5. We are still fine-tuning weapon layout, equipment, and spawning and want to ensure it’s a great experience that the competitive audience enjoys instead of releasing it in ranked before it’s ready.</p>



<p>Please note that the list of map and mode combinations in Ranked Arena for Season 5 will not be indicative of the final list for when the HCS Year 3 season begins. We will be keeping a close eye on the performance of all the map and mode combinations in the playlist and then making the final decisions in January 2024.</p>

<p>In just a few weeks the greatest Halo players in the world will face off here in Seattle, Washington for the title of Halo World Champion of 2023. At the same time, we’ll once again be hosting a $25,000 FFA tournament to see who will hoist the trophy this time around.</p>



<p>In the spirit of the open competition and qualification, we
wanted to increase the opportunity like never before and offer two players a
“golden ticket” entry into this prestigious FFA competition.</p>

<p>With the HCS 2023 Season at its half waypoint and Season 4 of Halo Infinite having just released, we’re making some adjustments to the gameplay meta and map rotation. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Equipment</h3>



<p>As seen in matchmaking since Season 4 released, the new equipment Quantum Translocator and Threat Seeker have entered the scene on various maps. These were not utilized at the HCS Major Arlington but are now in effect and will be used at all upcoming tournaments including the next event on August 4-6 at the HCS Global Invitational hosted by Spacestation Gaming.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Solitude</h3>



<p>Additionally, Season 4 has brought Solitude, the remake of the fan-favorite Halo 5 map, Plaza. Effective immediately Solitude is in the Official HCS map rotation for tournament play with the following modes:</p>



<ul><li>Slayer</li><li>Strongholds</li><li>King of the Hill</li></ul>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Removals</h3>



<p>For the map rotation, it’s important that we’re not just adding but removing at the same time in order to maintain a healthy number of map and mode combinations in the rotation. If there are too many, then the overall quality of play decreases as teams struggle to practice and master all of them. If there are too few then tournaments become stale and uninteresting.  </p>



<p>Effective immediately, the following map and mode combinations have been removed from the rotation:</p>



<ul><li>Slayer on Empyrean</li><li>Strongholds on Streets</li><li>King of the Hill on Streets</li></ul>



<p>In the Spring, HCS conducted a survey with the league’s pro players as well as amateur players who’d competed on the Faceit platform this year to gather feedback on the gameplay meta including map and mode combinations. These three were, by a wide margin, the lowest rated out of all map and mode combinations in the rotation. That is the information we used to make this decision, in addition to in-game telemetry based on balance, and we thank the competitors for their time in filling out the survey.</p>



<p>These will remain in the Ranked
Arena matchmaking playlist for a short period longer. </p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Recharge</h3>



<p>For the HCS Major Arlington, we
removed Recharge from the map rotation for Pool Play and Championship bracket
due to an issue that was causing instability for the map Recharge. We believe
we have resolved this issue and our internal testing has been resulting in a
restoration of stability for the map for observers. Recharge will be used as
originally planned for the remainder of the season. </p>



<p>Unless due to bug fixes or emergent and severe issues that require quick addressal, these will be the last major changes to the gameplay meta until <strong>after</strong> the Halo World Championship on October 13-15. </p>



<p>If the first half of the season was any indication, we’re in
for a very exciting second half and we can’t wait to see this new equipment as
well as Solitude make its way to the main stage. </p>
