It’s that time again for another issue of Forge Features!



We’re doing things Halo 2-style for this particular outing, as there have been a considerable number of stunning remakes and reimaginings of both campaign and multiplayer spaces from the 2004 classic.

The year is 2005. It’s the height of summer and the Maptacular Pack has just released for Halo 2!



Backwash was made to resemble the final area of the campaign mission 343 Guilty Spark from Halo: Combat Evolved, with additional cool details like 2401 Penitent Tangent flying around. It was famously the only map to be removed from matchmaking during the heyday of Halo 2, as the fog which compromises the player’s visibility couldn’t be loaded properly.



I used to enjoy playing “cat-and-mouse”-type custom games on Backwash where players had active camouflage and snipers. Now I can relive that thanks to this very loyal remake!

A remake of Foundation from Halo 2, but with at least six-hundred times the detail to make it feel like a genuinely lived-in courtyard.



Thankfully, you don’t need to go through any convoluted steps to unlock this one!

I love interactive map elements. Even when it’s something as simple as being able to extend a bridge or open a gate, or activate a shield somewhere… being able to subtly alter the way a map plays always makes me love it more.



On Apostate, one of the central features of the top part of the map is its light bridge. Shoot the shock cores on either side of the map and you’ll disable it, sending any Spartans caught on the bridge plunging to the depths below, leaving you to reactivate the bridge from a nearby terminal.



Sometimes true brilliance is found in the simplest ideas, and that’s exactly what you get with Apostate!

It’s the dense alleys and housing districts of Outskirts from the Halo 2 campaign, but greatly expanded in detail and there are no Jackals in this courtyard.



Look, if “No Jackal Snipers!” doesn’t sell you on a reservation at Hotel Zanzibar, I don’t know what will.

While not a direct recreation of any particular space, Vagabond evokes the neon-lit cityscapes seen throughout the series. There are elements of Plaza, Streets, and other urban maps that give a grounding sense of familiarity to this city of dreams.

I’m a big fan of seeing how creatively folks can marry the visual simplicity of Halo: Combat Evolved’s Forerunner aesthetics with some of the design sensibilities introduced in Halo 4. In terms of appearance, that’s exactly what you get with Nemesis, which also boasts an incredible level of detail in its out-of-map environments—sentinels fly into distant cavernous openings, birds pass overhead…



Getting caught unawares because you’ve found yourself staring at every little thing on this map is definitely a danger!

Are you looking to add some falling rocks to your map? Check out this handy YouTube tutorial that’ll teach you to create this ambient occurrence using a recursive event that will make five rocks constantly fall.

With the offseason coming to a close shortly we’re providing updates about the 2023 season of the Halo Championship Series so competitors and fans know what to expect for qualifiers as well as format for the Charlotte Major. Let’s jump right in.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">CHARLOTTE KICKOFF MAJOR</h2>

Format: The event format will be very similar to what
we saw in Year 1 but we’ve made a few refinements now that we’ve got a full
year of global competitive results to build from. Here’s what you can expect:



<ul><li>Open Bracket: As is customary, there will be an open bracket featured at the Charlotte Major (and every Major in 2023). This will take place on Friday, February 24 and will start and end on the same day. The bracket will be filled by the first 96 teams to purchase a pass. The top 4 teams from the Open Bracket will move on to Pool Play (2 from the Winner’s bracket, 2 from the Elimination Bracket) They will be placed into Pool Play and will have a shot to earn a spot in the Championship Bracket.</li><li>Pool Play: The Top 12 teams from qualifiers will be starting the tournament from Pool Play on Friday, February 24 competing in a Best of 5 round robin format as is customary. You’ll notice this number is slightly reduced from Year 1. We made this decision to increase the competitiveness of Pool Play, as well as the competitiveness of the Open Bracket. We expect to see more intense matches, a more intense Championship Bracket, as well as more competitive teams coming out of the Open Bracket. As with last year, each of the 4 competing regions will have a set amount of slots in Pool Play and Open Bracket which we’ve also adjusted based on Year 1 results. The regional breakout is as follows:<ul><li>North America: 8 Pool Play slots, 2 Open Bracket Travel Coverage slots</li><li>Europe: 2 Pool Play slots, 2 Open Bracket Travel Coverage slots</li><li>Mexico: 1 Pool Play slot, 1 Open Bracket Travel Coverage slot</li><li>Australia and New Zealand: 1 Pool Play slot, 2 Open Bracket Travel Coverage slots</li></ul></li></ul>



IMPORTANT NOTE: As with last year, all teams in pool play will receive travel stipends. Additionally, as with last year, we’re still providing regional travel support for the next top teams regionally so that there’s still meaningful global participation at the Majors and those teams have the chances to prove themselves worthy of qualifying for pool play and the championship bracket.



<ul><li>Championship Bracket: For HaloWC 2022 the
top 2 teams from each pool went to the Winner’s Bracket, the 3rd
place team went to the Elimination Bracket, while the 4th place team
was eliminated from the competition. In 2023, we’re going to replicate this
format for the Majors. Like with the Pool Play changes, our aim is to overall
create a more competitive format where the matches are also higher stakes along
the way. We felt this was a success for HaloWC and we’re excited to see it in
action for the Majors.</li></ul>



<ul><li>Qualifier Dates: As announced back at HaloWC, online qualifiers for the Charlotte Major are taking place later this month for all 4 regions. See the dates below:<ul><li>Charlotte Online Open: February 4-5 in NA, Feb 5 for rest of world.</li><li>Charlotte Main Qualifier: February 7-8 in NA, Feb 8 for rest of world. </li><li>Charlotte Roster Lock: February 9 (For Pool Play teams)</li></ul></li></ul>



Qualifier
Format:



<ul><li>Year 1 Points: Players fought all season long in 2022 and we want to recognize their efforts as well as ensure the first competition of the new season is as balanced as it can be. To accomplish this, Year 1 points will be used for seeding for Charlotte Online Open. Once the Online Open has concluded, all Year 1 points will be wiped and only Year 2 points will be used going forward. </li><li>Qualification: In Year 1 we leaned heavily into rewarding teams for earning spots in those specific qualifiers as opposed to points accumulated across all qualifiers. In Year 2, we’re going to balance this out a bit more so that teams that perform well in the main qualifier are rewarded, but that we’re accounting for consistent performances by rewarding teams that have accumulated points through consistent performances during the qualification period. You’ll see this philosophy throughout the season as well as we look to strike the right balance. Here’s how it breaks out per region:<ul><li>North America: 6 with placement qualification, 2 with points.</li><li>Europe: 1 with placement qualification, 1 with points.</li><li>Mexico: 1 with placement qualification</li><li>Australia and New Zealand: 1 with placement qualification</li></ul></li></ul>



Note: Teams that qualify for Open Bracket travel coverage per the breakout above will be determined based on points only.

Looking forward into 2023 we’re thrilled to get back out on
the road and put on a great tournament experience and show for all fans and
players. I think we all needed a bit of a break after the wild action in Year
1, but it’s now time to kick off Year 2!

2023 is here, which means we’re back—well fed and rested—to say goodbye to those post-holiday, mid-January blues and kick off a new year of Halo Infinite with the Joint Fire Event!

The Joint Fire Event runs from January 17-31 and brings a free 10-tier Event Pass featuring Halo: Reach-themed rewards.



Joint Fire is all about the JFO-class Mjolnir (for your Mark V [B] Armor Core), which many of you will no doubt remember from Halo: Reach, which you’ll be assembling by completing Event Challenges in the Joint Ops playlist.



You’ve had the opportunity to get to grips with Covert One Flag when it launched with the Winter Update, but for those who may need a tactical briefing on this asymmetrical mode…



Covert One Flag is 4v4 CTF with one flag up for grabs over multiple rounds. Attackers have unlimited active camouflage while defenders have unlimited threat sensors, with plenty of cat ‘n’ mouse “spies versus mercenaries” carnage to ensue.

Forge Features: January 13, 2023

Our aim for Year 2 of HCS with regards to map and mode combinations is to refine the list to respond to player and fan feedback, as well as well provide a platform for competitive and entertaining matches all year long. We believe it’s important that there’s a stable foundation of maps and modes throughout the season, but that we’re also making additions, subtractions, and adjustments as we go. There’s a fine balance here that we believe we struck in Year 1 and we hope to strike again in Year 2 of HCS. 



Below is the list of map and mode combinations for the start of Year 2 of HCS, expect this to evolve as more maps and modes release for Halo Infinite.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Balance Updates</h2>



Regarding balance updates, we know the competitive community has shared a lot of critical feedback since launch as well as since the most recent updates in November and December 2022. Here’s what we’re working on and when you can expect the updates.



Update 1: Empyrean and Argyle, Tuesday Jan 10. (RANKED / HCS ONLY)

Update 2: Sandbox tweaks, targeted for mid-February ahead of HCS Major Charlotte. 



<ul><li>Ammo Rack Update: <ul><li>In the Ranked Arena playlist and HCS, each Weapon Rack will now be set to a “Red Rack” meaning once a weapon is picked up, the Rack won’t spawn another until the weapon is despawned. </li></ul></li><li>Frag Grenades:<ul><li>Damage radius will be reduced</li></ul></li><li>Drop Weapon mechanic:<ul><li>Speed will be at parity with normal weapon switching.</li></ul></li><li>S7 Sniper Hip Fire:<ul><li>Reduction in random error angle when no-scoping.</li></ul></li></ul>



Update 3: We’re still finalizing all of the changes
we’re looking to make here so please don’t consider these to be 100% final
until we circle back and confirm in February. The soonest that these could release
is Season 3. 



<ul><li>Footstep audio: <ul><li>We adjusting footstep audio to better suit competitive play. Enemies are now harder to hear at distance and easier to hear when very close, and we improved accuracy of enemy location based on footstep audio when enemies are above, below, or behind you. </li></ul></li><li>Mangler: <ul><li>Will vault from competitive. Will undergo a rework in the future before being reintroduced.</li></ul></li><li>Sword: <ul><li>Will vault from competitive. Will undergo finer tuning before reintroducing as well as updated placing on maps better suited for the weapon.</li></ul></li><li>VK78 Commando: <ul><li>Slight retuning to reduce effectiveness. We felt the Winter Update pushed the needle a little too far, tuning again to find the sweet spot.</li></ul></li><li>Spike Grenades: <ul><li>Reducing randomness to alleviate frustration.</li></ul></li><li>Disruptor: <ul><li>Overall, we’re looking to reduce effectiveness and/or utility of the weapon in order to find the sweet spot. </li></ul></li><li>Pulse Carbine: <ul><li>Will vault from competitive, will explore a rework in the future. </li></ul></li><li>Plasma Pistol: <ul><li>Slight retuning to reduce effectiveness in order to find the sweet spot. </li></ul></li><li>Ammo Reduction: <ul><li>For competitive, we’re reducing ammo for Heatwave, Stalker Rifle, CQS48 Bulldog, and Shock Rifle.</li></ul></li></ul>



There will be new additions in Season 3 coming into the game as well as ranked/HCS. These include Shroud Screen equipment as well as the M392 Bandit Rifle. We’re expecting these to have a meaningful impact on the gameplay meta and we can’t wait to see how they all perform in your hands.



Once these updates have been released, our intention is to more quickly respond to player feedback and make smaller tweaks throughout the season that maintain a fine competitive balance rather than waiting longer and having to make much larger tweaks. With regards to timing, our intention is never to pull the rug out from our competitors and make significant updates just before an event. There will be times however where we prioritize ensuring the event is played on as balanced/competitive sandbox as possible and thus may enter moments where players wish they had a bit more time to familiarize themselves with tweaks. Things that we will avoid in that tightened timeframe would be the addition of new maps, new modes, new equipment, new weapons, etc. However, you could see the removal of certain items, or slight adjustments to existing items. As we did with the updates above, we will work to let players and fans know what’s changing and when in order to be more transparent and ensure players can be as prepared as possible.

Winter Contingency II runs from December 20 through January 3, bringing a free 10-tier Event Pass containing new Holiday-themed cosmetics.



For the Event Pass this year, you can progress it simply by completing Challenges, which means that you can complete the entire Event Pass at any point during the time in which the Winter Contingency II event is running. Speaking of the return of Flipflop, we’ve got a brand new two-part mini-comic featuring the return of Flipflop. The cosmetics you’re earning in the Event Pass? He’s gathered them up in his travels since the events of the Yappening, but he’s also brought with him some festive cheer as well.
